To Win or Not To Win

Finally, my semester has ended and I am officially free! But I have spent two nights at home without going out. Boredom has settled in rather quickly. Still, I would choose these over doing assignments or preparing for exams. =P

Recently, I saw this piece of news that a man had won the lottery in the States. He is now a millionaire.

It sets me thinking.. How come the people who won so much money never stay as millionaires? Their names are not in the world's richest. They do not appear in Forbes Magazine. We never heard of their achievements after winning so much money.

Imagine having millions as capital for business. The person can practically deal with any business he/she wants. Hotels, F&B, Entertainment, Media, etc. With that huge capital, the person ought to succeed in one way or another!

I guess what happened with the money is that the winners spent them all away. The millionaires who stay as millionaires are the ones who have acquired the discipline, wisdom and determination as they start from scratch and work their way up. When the huge windfall suddenly dropped into their laps, these winners simply lack the discipline, skills and wisdom to make their money grow. Thus, they never stay as millionaires.

So, it's good that we do not win lottery right? Coz it must have sucked to go back to our poor ways after living as millionaires. =P

Mag's and Gwen's Birthday At Paulaner!

A quick entry before hitting my books!


We celebrated Gwen's and Maggie's birthday at Paulaner this year. I've only been to Paulaner for drinks and didn't know they serve food on the second floor. Heck! I didn't even know they have a second floor. Haha!




I love their pork knuckles! The meat is so tender, it doesn't taste like pork! I think it was one of the best roast pork knuckles I've ever tasted!

Epitome of Murphy's Law

I am a true epitome of Murphy's Law.

"Things that will go wrong, will go wrong."


I had two project deadlines yesterday - a reflections and a written report. The reflections was done two weeks ago, which I must say, was most unusual for me. The written report was completed yesterday at 1pm, which I must say, was very typical of me.

The report's deadline was at 5.30pm. So I thought I got plenty of time to print out both my report and reflections and sashayed slowly to school.

That was when Murphy's Law acted.

My printer was spoilt halfway through printing. The last few pages it spewed looked like they were written in Morse code. Spent some time trying to fix it but failed. Spent more time cursing and swearing.

Panic set in. I smsed my cousin-in-law and asked her whether I could go to her house next door to print my assignments. She replied ok and I hopped over. Plugged in the printer's USB and waited. Result: My laptop could not auto install the printer.

Panic started mounting. I asked my dad to send me to school. Reached school at 3pm.

Long queue in the Computer Lab. Got my computer after 10 minutes and started printing.

Heart beat slower and stomach started growling. The production of adrenaline slowly stopped. Saw my friend and let her used my computer.

"Do you know that the reflection's deadline was at 12 noon?" WTH!! Adrenaline exploded throughout my body! I thought it was at 5.30pm, similar to the report's deadline! I quickly packed my things, apologised to my friend and rushed to hand in both report and reflections.


Tell me, am I the epitome of Murphy's Law or what.

Braces Diary

Dear Teeth,


This month, the ortho decided that it is time to close the gaps. He introduced the rubber chain which was white in colour. It is a bad colour choice because the rubber chain now is currently neon green. The cause of this colour change? Thai green curry.

After the visit to the ortho, you were pretty sore. It reminded me of the time when I had the separators in. It was horrible. At one point, I took nearly an hour to finish my fish bun. Luckily, you are somewhat back to normal now. =)

The Bride-to-be's Birthday

We celebrated our first-girl-to-get-married's birthday on Saturday. It was held at her house again after a one year hiatus.


At first, we thought of hitting the clubs after her birthday dinner. But it was cancelled in the end. By the way, I never knew that clubbing is such a excellent incentive for me. I managed to finish my reflection essay two weeks before it was due because I wanted to go clubbing without feeling guilty. Hmm.. Maybe I should ask my friends out to club whenever assignments are due soon. =P


Anyway, we had fun playing Mahjong!

Birdie and I were shocked that they were still at 南风 when we reached at 630pm as they started playing at 430pm. All due to .... Ah Bun. Haha!

Smses That Irritate Me

I have to urge to blog about the smses that irritate the hell out of me. Whenever I see these type of smses, I can feel my blood pressure rising, my heart starts pumping faster and anger slowly creeps in. Deciding that blogging about it would make me feel better, I am going to list down those irritating smses starting with the most annoying one.

1) Chain smses

I don't know how many times I have said this but I am going to repeat it again. I HATE CHAIN SMSES AND EMAILS!!!!!!!! Chain smses/emails are those that CURSE AT YOU if you did not pass them on! WHICH TRUE FRIEND WOULD WANT TO CURSE ANY FRIEND????

And the ironic thing is that the "curses" usually are attached to heartwarming and touching friendship smses/emails. The sms/email would start of with, "you are such a good friend and I appreciate you so much." The next moment, "you better pass it on or I'll curse you!"

Usually, these kind of smses/emails are sent from people who want to save their asses from what they believe to be real curses. Let me tell those people this, if you send me those smses/emails because you do not wish to be cursed by the fake friends who sent them, you will still GET CURSED. BY ME. Too bad, never think of the repercussions, do you?




2) SMSes with so-called "Psychology Questions"

These smses usually goes like this:

From the sender: "Do you see me as a...
a) ...Rabbit
b)...Dragon
c)...Pig"

When I first received such smses, I really thought seriously before answering. But the replies ALWAYS PISS ME OFF! The replies are always way-off about how I feel about the sender! And so, I detest these smses!

Seriously, if you REALLY want to know how I feel about you, ASK ME! Don't beat around the bush and seek comfort in all these flimsy and unreliable analysis. Someone told me before that the answers reflect how I feel subconsciously. If that is true, UNLESS YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR OR GOT STRUCK BY LIGHTNING, I DOUBT THE FEELINGS IN MY "SUBCONSCIOUS LEVEL" WOULD EVER SURFACE!

3) Stupid Questions

These are sms questions that the sender can answer himself/herself using common sense. Just received one such question which made me want to blog this entry. I was sms-chatting with this person about my Taiwan trip.

Sender of stupid question (SSQ): So are you going to hitch hike?

Me: Of coz not. Both of us are girls. Anyway, don't think we are as poor as that.

SSQ: Haha.. But you said backpacking ma. So I tot you hitchhike your way around.

I said something that has an underlying meaning of "don't be stupid" and that we will save money on lodgings.

Then... STUPID QUESTION ALERT!

24th Birthday!!

I had a great time celebrating my birthday this year!! A lot of feasting, drinking and singing were done. Happy! I had a way better time than celebrating the chinese new year. Nothing happened much during new year except that I went to work part time as a car cleaner on the eve.


Anyway, back to my birthday celebrations! The first celebration was with Maggie, Gwen and Ba Jie at Brewerkz!





They bought me the coolest eyeliner I ever seen! And I am so in love with it. =)

We spent 5 long hours, sitting in Brewerkz, talking about everything under the sun, or rather, moon. From ghost stories, to insects and cats phobia, to Ba Jie's investments, to us opening a mani and pedi salon together. Come to think of it, girls are rather formidable creatures, eh? =P

The second celebration was with my Enemies loves! Birdie was not in town this time round. You missed the treat, girl! We went to the Scarlet Hotel for lunch!

Celebrated with Huli this time round. So we shared the birthday cake!

On my actual day, I celebrated my birthday with my family. It was a nice simple affair at a Teochew restaurant after visiting the temple (coz it was the last day of the lunar new year).


On the 4th of March, my NIE clique celebrated my birthday for me at Catherine's house! She has a KTV system at her place and gamely suggested cooking for us!



Her KTV system is super cool! We had the whole block as our audience. Haha!

I Don't Know What I'm Doing..

I wish I can fall effortlessly in love. But it seems that everytime, I have to make an effort to fall in love because I feel that there shouldn't be unreciprocated love in the world. And I just can't do it. I can't force myself to like someone. I can't force myself to think of someone. I can't force myself when I don't even know what I want.

Others enjoy the process but I keep having this sinking, dull feeling in me. What am I doing??? This feeling really sucks.

Being Rebels Again!

Finally completed the project which I was whining and complaining about in my previous two posts. So it was time to have some fun!

We hit Rebel again. I love Rebel to pieces! It is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Butter Factory which was packed full of people acting ATAS. The music they played sucks and there are always queues to the toilet. *Thumbs down*

This time round, there were six of us. For the first time! Too bad Birdie is in the States (she must be having loads of fun), otherwise it will be full force! I guess there is always another time. =P

Enough is Enough

I had enough. That bitch must always say something. Whenever I suggest ANYTHING, she will have something to say. Even something simple like the meeting time, she will want to suggest something else. Siao leh! And she is always wanting to fix something that is not broken! It is like she must open her mouth to prove her existence. Shut the fuck up lar! If she pisses me again, it will be the first time I scold somebody without being tactful. I promise.

Yes Boss..

I remember during my last semester, I complained about a dictator in one of my project groups. I thought I had met the ultimate.

No...... No one can beat this person in one my current project groups. We (the other group members and I) are fed up with her attitude. Actually, I have worked with many domineering people before. Sometimes, I suspect I am one too. But no one beats her to it! She is not only bossy, she is tactless, nity-picky and inflexible. Whenever we had group meetings, I had this feeling that I was reporting to my boss. It seemed that whatever we suggested need to gain her approval before we could move on. As a result, we kept going in circles, WHICH WAS A WASTE OF TIME!

AND WHAT MAKES ME BLOW IS THAT SHE IS NOT VERY COMPETENT! Ultimate, man! She wants to dominate everything and yet she is not up to standard. If she is bossy and yet knows how to lead us to score well, I will follow her. At least I know my grades are safe. BUT NOW! I don't know what is wrong with her! When we had consultations, I could see that she didn't understand the tutor's questions. She would then continue asking without really understanding what was being said. So irritating!!

Oh my god. I am so worried about the presentation now. I have volunteered to compile and edit the slides. I am going to DO IT MY WAY. If she wants to go against me, I have prepared a counter-argument and this time, SHE IS GOING TO SEE IT MY WAY. ROAR!



One more thing about this person. She actually prepared minutes after every discussions. In the minutes, she put down who said what and did what. CRAZY! If she is so free, can she go and read more books? Improve her comprehension skills? Work on her EQ? Grrr...

Dear Teeth,

There is something different this month. This month, instead of tying little rubber bands around the brackets for the upper teeth, the ortho twisted metal wires around them.







He said that this is to prevent the two front teeth from moving apart from each other. I guess he is not a fan of Madonna. (There is a huge gap between her two front teeth) =p

I am so happy he is doing something to prevent that from happening. I feel that I have made a right choice in choosing him. =)

Public Transport Idiot

I am such a "goon-doo", also known as idiot, when it comes to public transport. I am excluding the cabs here because, to toot my own horn, I am quite pro when it comes to locating taxi stands and I know the charges like the back of my hand. =P



Due to the enlarging hole in my pocket, I have tried to stick to taking public transport as diligently as I can. Today, I decided to take a bus to Beauty World to visit the doctor. Catherine dropped me off at a bus stop in the Jurong area after school and I decided to take a bus to the interchange before changing to bus 52. After waiting for around 15 minutes, I realised that bus 157 and 66 go to Beauty World too! But I have to board them from the opposite side.

I managed to board bus 66 but I alighted too early. In the end, I had to drag myself to Beauty World under the glaring hot sun.

When it was time to go back, I boarded the wrong bus. I took bus 52 thinking that since the bus stop near my house has bus 52, I should be safe. But I took the bus in the wrong direction! In the end, I ended up at MacRitchie Reservior because after that bus stop which I alighted from, the bus went straight to the expressway. The first bus stop it came to after the expressway was the MacRitchie bus stop.

How unlucky can I get with travelling today. Not to mention that today my dad's car broke down in the middle of PIE. I think I need to take more buses, get lost a few more times, be "unlucky" for a few more times before I become a expert in taking buses. Bleagh.

Planning Taiwan, A Funny Love Poem

Just spent the whole afternoon planning for my Taiwan trip. It is confirmed!! Pei Xuan and me confirmed the date on Friday. We plan to go on 10th May and return on 24th May. 2 whole weeks in Taiwan!

We want some adventure in Taiwan. White water rafting, theme parks, river trekking, cycling, etc, are on our mind. I said jokingly to Xuan that we are going to come back tanner, toner and fitter. Haha!

Due to all the physical activities I foresee, I am going to start running at least twice a week starting from tomorrow. My body is badly out of shape, literally too, so I have to put in more effort in getting it back to shape.

Besides planning what to do, have to plan how to get to the different places, what to wear, how to pack, etc.. I was tired trying to plan the flight details already. Dunno how long we can last.

Last Saturday, I went to my cousin's wedding. In the morning, I accompanied my bro to her house because he was the "door opener" for the groom. My parents didn't go with us.

History repeats itself again. People thought we were a couple. Including my relatives!

At my cousin's place, my 4th uncle asked my brother when he is going to get married. But he didn't ask me! Later in the morning, when he walked passed another cousin (sister of the bride) and me, he asked my cousin whether she knew who I was. Then he added happily, "This is Shi Yin, your cousin." It was obvious he got my real name from his wife! My relatives do not call me by my real name. So I concluded he forgot who I was and thought that I was my bro's gf.

I chatted with another cousin of mine, the bride's sister. After some small talk, she turned to me, stuck out her hand and asked, "And you are...?"

I replied, "Shi Yin, your cousin."

She looked shocked for a second before covering her mouth and exclaimed, "Oh my god! I remember you!" She thought I was my bro's gf.

I think my bro is one of the major roadblocks that are hindering my success in meeting new guys. The "brothers" of the groom are all tall, quite good-looking and are architects. Such a wonderful chance! So, I made my bro call me "Jie Jie" loudly in front of them. Haha! But I think he did it too softly... Bleagh.

Anyway, in one of the games before the Sisters allow the groom in, the groom and his brothers had to come up with a list of household items. They came up with cushion, pillow, stool, chair, spoon, toilet paper roll and doormat. The groom would then have to use these items and come up with a poem to describe the bride.

This is the poem.


I remained standing on the doormat,

Even when I had a chair and a stool

Because I remember you as soft as a cushion

To me you are as soft as the toilet paper

While I am as rough as a toilet roll

But together we make a toilet paper roll

When you feed me with a spoon

Odac Genting Trip!

Finally my withdrawal syndromn has lessen! I am prepared to blog a super long entry about my trip because it was one of my most "adventurous" trip. I guess being with Odacians, one can expect a lot of walking, walking and more walking.

Day 1

Once we reached Genting, we checked in and headed to Kuala Lumpur immediately for lunch. I think that as Singaporean kids who are used to travelling from the west to the east in under an hour, we didn't expect to reach KL Chinatown at 5pm despite leaving at 3pm. By then, we were SUPER hungry and some of us got rather cranky.


I don't really like KL Chinatown. It is the place to go to for fake goods. There were sooooo many! And they looked pretty genuine to me from far. I got no interest in fake goods though. Filling my stomach was the top priority at that time.

We headed straight to A&W. It seems that Singaporeans love to go to A&W overseas. Haha! The Rootbeer float was shiokness! By the way, I tend to use "shiokness" a lot these days, especially during the trip. Shiokness!

After the meal, we couldn't decide where to go. So, we decided to try out the Bak Kut Teh recommended by Zhi Hui despite having just eaten. The Bak Kut Teh was so different from our Singapore version! It was served in a claypot and had lots of goodness inside served with fragrant herbal soup- mushrooms, 3-layer pork, pork ribs, pork innards (which we had them replaced). Shiokness!





We were joking that the boss must be very disappointed that we ordered so little. They had to set up a table for 10 and we ordered only Bak Kut Teh for 6. =P

After the super-filling meal (or snack), some of us had cravings for the Satay that we passed by on the way to the Bak Kut Teh store. But sadly, our stomachs let us down. We were damn full and couldn't squeeze in anything more. The Satay smelt damn nice lar!

With no real purpose in going Chinatown, we decided to WALK to KL Berjaya Times Square. It was a REAL FAR walk! Especially it was drizzling at that time. I don't know why we walked instead of taking the train. The risk of getting rob kept ringing in my mind too. I guess it was a very "ODAC" thing to do.



There, just to show off how far we walked. In the rain. =P



Ok, the nicest thing about the walk was that we saw a rainbow.

The Berjaya Time Square is huge! I think it is easily twice the size of Vivocity. And the most, most wonderful part of the shopping centre is that there is a theme park inside it! When I saw the huge roller coaster tracks with its many twist and turns, I was awed and adrenaline immediately started pumping furiously around my body. Esther and I decided to ask the rest to go for a ride when we met up at 9pm (we split up to do some shopping). We were practically jumping off our shoes on the way to the theme park's entrance. BUT! The theme park closed at 9PM! If only we said to meet at 830pm! Argh!

Super disappointed.


I guess our Taxi ride back made up for roller coaster fun we missed. IT WAS DAMN FRIGHTENING AND EXCITING. When we made our way up Genting earlier in the day, we already noticed that it was very foggy. On our way back at night, it was even "foggier"! We couldn't even see the road more than 5 metres away! It didn't help that the mountain roads have no streetlights. We could only depend on the reflectors at the road sides.

There were many cars parked at the side on the way up. Maybe the drivers were not confident enough to drive up the dangerous roads. I will never forget what I saw next. A car got stuck in the cliff! Let me try to show you what I saw.



Ok, have to use a bit of imagination here. It was at night and very foggy. I only saw the car when we were directly at its side. What surprised us was that the car was not touching the ground and it was tilted down! I don't know the driver managed to jam the car into the wall and how he is going to get it down. Good luck to him.

Luckily for Xiao Mei, Johnny and me, we had a good driver who was awake and confident and whose car was working fine. Unfortunately for Zhao Rong, Jia Hui and Esther, they encountered a sleepy driver whose headlights were not working. They had to "borrow" the light from the headlights of other cars! And when the driver managed to nagivate one steep turn, he let go of the steering wheel and clapped! He was so unbelievable! Zhao Rong told us he was stepping on brakes-that-were-not-there throughout the way up. Haha!

After washing up, we hit the casinos. However, I had more fun in Zhao Rong, Jia Hui and Esther's room playing Mahjong! Another very "ODAC" thing to do.




Day 1 ended with us safely back in Genting.

Second ride - Pirate ship! It was my first time on a pirate ship. Seriously, I freaked out. I kept telling Esther, "I am so afraid!" =P

That day was very foggy too! The Freefall ride looked too exciting.







We waited for 1 and a half hour for the Cockscrew ride. Out of absolute boredom, we played "喜怒哀乐"! Must look from left to right starting from the top.








And the winners!




After a whole day in the theme park, we went to the Mushroom Farm for dinner. But before dinner, we had a short gambling session catered to poor students like us. Blackjack with a maximum bet of 50 cents in Ringgit. =P I won myself a handful of coins.





Each of us ordered a dish at Mushroom Farm except Xiao Mei and Johnny. The food was damn good! However, they underestimated us, or rather the boys, and made the portion too small. We were not very full after the meal. Headed back to Coffee Bean for Chicago Cheesecake. A delicious hot meal and creamy thick cheesecake equal to shiokness!







Our bill only came up to 192RM. Less than S$10 per person!

Cam-whoring while waiting for the van to pick us up back to the hotel. It was freezing cold out in the road. I believe that was the first time in Genting my teeth actually chattered from the cold.


Back in Genting for bowling session! We were impressed by the lights, the music and the glow-in-the-dark bowling balls. Esther and I were not impressed with the shoes though. They stank real bad. *Pukes*


Xiao Mei is a real neat freak! Sharing the room with her was stressful yet motivating in some ways for a messy person like me. It is the first time I saw shoes arranged so neatly in a bowling alley. I really took my hat off her. =P

Spent the last night in the casino and Mahjong in the room next door.


Last Day

We had Pizzahut for brunch and did some last minute shopping before boarding the coach back.





The pathetic fried prawn that tasted as bad as it looked.



One last group photo and then it was bye-bye Genting.


I had a lot of fun during this trip. There was a lot of catching up with each other and plenty of lame jokes to keep our spirits high. I am glad that despite us meeting up only twice or thrice a year, we were still able to talk comfortably with each other and showed care and concern in our little ways.

I really love this group of friends. =)
